Hi. I’m still here.
In the comments of a previous post, some readers have pondered my mortality status. As in: Alive, or dead? It’s a fine question, seeing as this blog, which at its best was regularly updated twice daily, has now fallen mostly quiet. So here, via YouTube, is a quick answer to the question:
The slightly longer answer goes like this:
Since I started this site in 1997, some friends of mine have tried and failed to keep their blogs active, and asked me how I kept updating this one. My answer was always that blogging is a matter of habit: You set aside a bit of time every day, and soon enough it just comes as naturally as anything else—showering, eating, blogging. That was easy enough when I lived in the ‘burbs and worked fairly predictable hours, because there was always some free time to set aside. But that’s not really the case anymore. I’m far more enthusiastic about my current job than any previous gigs, and Boston has a way of keeping me occupied and away from the computer. That’s a good thing, I think. But HappyScrappy has suffered.
I’m not shutting the blog down, though. I still enjoy having it, and still appreciate what readers it has. But it is time to acknowledge that there’s no way, at least for now, that I’ll be able to update it as often as I once did. I’m not yet sure how to define that, but I’ll try to figure it out. In the meantime, thanks again for still checking in, and I look forward to moderately meeting your lowered expectations.

hey there,
i was reading Happy Scrappy back way before it was a blog. in the days that you now refer to as “the dustbin days.” i had totally forgotten about it until one day I was on the bus and i saw some (surprise! surprise!) goths. It was like the nineties again. My friend started talking about how stupid goths were, and I said, “oh, I donno, I just think they’re kind of funny.” Then, like the guy from Memento, a flood of repressed aim conversations hit me, and the minute I got home I went to check to see if you still had up the thing where you put the text through the babelfish autotranslater multiple times and then back into english.
anyway, i’ve been reading the blog for a few weeks now, and it’s one of the few ‘blogs’ i check regularly. jolly good shit.
also, it’d be neat if you posted links to your professional work on the blog as they became available.

Jason,
Wondering what was up with the less than frequency. You’ve made it up to me however by giving me the phrase “I look forward to moderately meeting your lowered expectations.” I have a new work catch phrase!

I, too, read this blog before I knew what a blog was (haha, remember the blinding backgrounds and the screenwide text?) …in fact, I was still in grade school back then.
I’m glad you’re not killing it yet, I would miss it so. It’s the only blog I can even remember the url to type it in. Here’s to another 11 years of (in)frequent updates.
